Somewhere around the third week of January, when the snow has been grey for a month and the salad greens in the crisper cost more than the gas to go get them, almost every northern grower has the same thought: what if I just grew a lemon tree?

It is a wonderful fantasy. A glossy little tree in a pot, heavy with fruit, sitting in a greenhouse while the wind does its worst outside. And when you search for whether it can be done, you will find a thousand cheerful articles saying yes, absolutely, lemons are easy! — every single one of them written by somebody in Georgia.

So here is the Canadian answer, which is more interesting than either a flat yes or a flat no.

The short answer

Yes — you can absolutely keep a lemon tree alive through a Canadian winter in a greenhouse. That part is easier than people think.

Whether you can get it to actually produce lemons all winter is a different question entirely, and the honest answer there is: only if you are willing to pay for it.

Almost all the confusion online comes from those two questions being mashed into one. “Can I grow lemons?” gets answered as though survival and production are the same project. They are not. They have different temperature requirements, different light requirements, and wildly different heating bills. Separate them and the whole thing becomes clear.

Survival and fruiting are two different jobs

Citrus are not like your apple tree. They are evergreen and do not enter the deep winter dormancy that deciduous fruit trees rely on — no leaf drop, no shutting down and sleeping through it under the snow. Instead they slow their metabolism dramatically in cool conditions, a state closer to quiescence than true dormancy. That single biological fact drives everything else.

Mature, well-acclimated Meyer lemons have survived brief dips to around −6°C — but treat that as a survival extreme, not a target. Damage typically begins several degrees warmer than that, the fruit freezes before the wood does, blossoms are more delicate still, and young trees are far less tolerant than mature ones. Duration matters as much as the number: a half-hour dip and a six-hour freeze are not the same event.

Meanwhile, a tree that is merely surviving is not doing much of anything — it is idling. To get flowers, fruit set, and ripening, you need to hold the tree meaningfully warmer — roughly 10–13°C as a working floor, with fruit development notably better above that — and you need to keep it there for months.

The gap between “just above freezing” and “warm enough to fruit” looks small on paper. In a Canadian January it is the difference between a modest heating bill and a genuinely painful one.

Treat every figure above as approximate. Real thresholds shift with cultivar, rootstock, tree age, how well the plant has hardened off, and how long the cold lasts.

The problem nobody in the sunny articles mentions

Suppose you decide the heating bill is worth it. You crank the greenhouse to a balmy 15°C, you have your Meyer lemon in its pot, and you wait for lemons.

They may not come. And the reason is the thing that separates Canadian growing from almost everywhere else that writes about it: we do not have a temperature problem so much as a light problem.

In December at Canadian latitudes, the sun is low, the days are short, and the light is frequently filtered through overcast. Then your glazing takes another cut: glass transmits roughly 88–92% of the light hitting it, poly film around 80–90%, and twin-wall polycarbonate closer to 75–82% — and every one of those figures drops as the glazing ages, dusts over, or clouds with condensation. Add a few weeks of snow on the roof and there are days when the interior of a greenhouse is, in plant terms, close to twilight.

Citrus are sun plants. They evolved in places where winter light is still generous. A warm, dark greenhouse asks the tree to run its metabolism at summer speed on a winter light budget, and the result is a stressed, leggy, pale plant that drops its blossoms and sulks — sometimes worse off than if you had simply let it go cool and quiet.

This is why the “just add a heater” advice fails here. Warmth raises the tree’s respiration — its rate of burning energy — while dim light limits how much energy it can photosynthesize to replace it. Push that balance far enough negative for long enough and the tree is running at a loss all winter. Heat without light does not produce lemons. It produces an expensive, unhappy houseplant.

If you want winter fruit, supplemental lighting is not an optional upgrade — it is half the system. One caveat worth understanding before you buy: intensity matters as much as day length.   • Holding just above freezing is genuinely achievable in a small, well-built greenhouse — often with a modest heater, good thermal mass, and sensible insulation.
  • Holding 10°C+ through a prairie or northern Ontario January is a different category of expense. You are fighting a temperature difference of 30 to 45 degrees, all night, every night, for months.
  • At any given moment, heat loss is roughly proportional to the gap between inside and outside — double the gap, roughly double the rate at which heat escapes.
  • But your seasonal fuel bill grows faster than that gap does, because raising your target temperature does two things at once. It widens the gap on every hour you are heating, and it dramatically increases the number of hours you need to heat at all. At a 2°C setpoint the heater only fires on genuinely cold nights. At 12°C it runs almost continuously from October to April. That combination is why stepping from 2°C to 12°C can far more than double what you actually burn.

The version that actually works: let it rest

Here is the approach experienced cold-climate citrus growers land on, and it is quietly brilliant because it works with the northern year instead of fighting it.

Stop trying to grow lemons in winter. Grow them in summer, and simply keep the tree alive through winter.

Through the cold months, you hold the greenhouse just above freezing and let the tree idle in low light. It is not growing, it is not fruiting, it is not asking for much — and because you are only defending against frost rather than maintaining tropical conditions, the heating requirement drops dramatically. Then, as light returns in late winter and spring, you warm things up, the tree wakes, flowers, and sets fruit through the long bright days. Citrus can take many months to ripen, so a tree that flowers in spring is often carrying fruit toward the following winter.

There is a bonus in this that most people do not expect: a cool rest period often improves the fruit. In many citrus varieties — mandarins and oranges especially — several weeks of cool temperatures encourage better rind colour and sugar development than fruit pushed continuously in warmth. It is not a universal rule across every species and setup, but it is common enough that the northern winter, which felt like the obstacle, frequently turns out to be doing you a favour.

Grown this way, a lemon tree in a cold-climate greenhouse is a realistic, affordable, genuinely rewarding project rather than an act of financial defiance.

Choose the right citrus, and the right rootstock

Not all citrus are equally suited to this. If you are going to do it, start with a variety that is on your side.

One detail worth asking the seller about: rootstock. A citrus tree sold to you is usually grafted, and the roots it sits on materially change its cold tolerance and its final size. Trifoliate orange rootstock — and its curious contorted relative, Flying Dragon — improves cold hardiness by several degrees and keeps trees genuinely small, which matters enormously when the tree has to live in a pot in a greenhouse. Two apparently identical Meyer lemons on different rootstocks are not the same plant. Ask.

The practical setup

If you are in, here is the honest kit list — not the aspirational one.

Grow it in a container, always. A pot lets you move the tree, control the soil, and — critically — bail out. If your greenhouse suffers a heater failure at −30°C, a potted tree can be carried indoors. A planted one dies. Use a large container with genuinely free drainage; citrus hate wet feet more than they hate cold.

Heat is the insurance policy, not the growth strategy. Size your greenhouse heater on Amazon.ca to reliably hold above freezing on your worst night, not to hold tropical warmth on an average one. So: should you?

If you are asking whether a lemon tree can live in a Canadian greenhouse and give you real fruit — yes, genuinely, and it is one of the more delightful things you can do with a cold-climate greenhouse.

If you are asking whether you can pick fresh lemons in February while it is −35°C outside, you can, but you will be paying for heat and light through the darkest, most expensive months of the year to do it. Some people happily make that trade. Most, once they see the arithmetic, choose the cool-rest approach — and end up with a healthier tree and better fruit anyway.

Most citrus advice is written for climates with brighter winters and milder nights than almost anywhere in Canada. The cold-climate reality is that lemons are easy if you let your greenhouse be cold in winter — and expensive the moment you insist otherwise. That is not a disappointment. That is just the northern version of the instructions, which nobody bothered to write down.
