When to Start Tomatoes Indoors in Canada: By Zone, Frost Date, and Region

Why the standard advice starts you two weeks too early — and how to find your own date in about five minutes.

There is a particular week in late February when every northern gardener starts to lose their nerve. The catalogues arrived in January. The snow is still knee-deep. Somebody on Facebook has posted a photo of tomato seedlings already showing true leaves, and you begin to wonder whether you have left it too late.

You have not. That person has almost certainly started too early, and by May their plants will be leggy, root-bound, and behind yours — a fact that is quietly one of the most useful things to know about seed starting in a cold climate.

Here is how to work out your actual date, why the standard “six to eight weeks before last frost” advice sends most Canadians two weeks early, and what to do instead.

First: your zone is not the answer

The question people type into search bars is “when do I start tomatoes in zone 3?” It is a reasonable question and it has no good answer, because hardiness zones do not describe your growing season at all.

Canada’s plant hardiness zones combine winter minimum temperature with a range of other long-term climate factors — frost-free period, summer heat, rainfall, snow cover and wind — to estimate whether a perennial plant can survive outdoors at your location. That is a genuinely useful thing to know when you are buying an apple tree. It tells you surprisingly little about when to sow an annual, because a tomato does not care whether it can survive your January — it will be dead by then regardless. What actually governs your timing is two dates: when you can safely put a tomato outside in spring, and when frost will kill it in fall. Zones correlate loosely with both, which is why zone-based advice is not useless — just imprecise in a way that costs you a crop. Two gardeners in the same zone, one on a lakeshore and one in a valley bottom forty minutes away, can have transplant dates three weeks apart.

The mistake almost every seed-starting guide makes

Nearly every source, including good Canadian ones, tells you: start tomato seeds six to eight weeks before your last frost date.

Read that carefully and you will spot the problem. Six to eight weeks is roughly how long a tomato seedling needs to become a transplant-ready plant. So counting back six to eight weeks from a date means you are aiming to have plants ready on that date. But you do not transplant tomatoes on your last frost date. Nobody does, and nobody should.

For most home gardeners, tomatoes are safest going out one to two weeks after the average last frost, once nights hold reliably above about 10°C and the soil has warmed. (Growers with row cover, cloches, tunnels or a greenhouse can and do plant earlier — protection changes the calculation, and that is the point of it.) The University of Saskatchewan puts it plainly for Saskatoon growers: start transplants about six weeks before planting out, and plant out about two weeks after the frost-free date. That is a materially different instruction from the popular version — and it is roughly two weeks later.

So the fix is one small change with a real payoff:

Count back from your transplant date, not your frost date.

The five-minute calculation

Work it in this order and you will land on a date you can trust.

Step 1 — Find your average last spring frost

Look it up for your nearest weather station rather than your province. This is your starting reference, not your answer.

Step 2 — Add a safety margin to get your real transplant date

Add one to two weeks. This is the step that separates gardeners who lose plants from gardeners who do not, and the reason is statistical: an average last frost date carries roughly a 50% chance of frost falling after it. It is a coin flip, not a deadline. Experienced growers treat it as the earliest date worth considering, then wait.

How much margin depends on your nerve and your backup plan. If you have row cover ready and you watch the forecast, one week is defensible. If a lost tray means no tomatoes this year, take two.

Step 3 — Count back six to eight weeks

From your transplant date, count back:

  • 6 weeks — standard determinate and early varieties, and the safer choice if your light setup is modest
  • 7–8 weeks — most indeterminates and larger slicers, and only if your light is genuinely good; vigorous types can outgrow their pots by week eight
  • 8–10 weeks — slow heirlooms and beefsteaks, only if you have genuinely good light and room to pot up

That date is when you sow. Write it down.

One thing to settle before you sow: determinate or indeterminate

Tomato varieties come in two growth habits, and which one you are growing changes both your timing and what your season looks like.

Determinate types grow to a genetically set size, flower, and set most of their crop over a relatively concentrated window. They stay compact, need less support, and that concentrated harvest is a real advantage where the season is short — you get your tomatoes before frost rather than watching a late flush die on the vine. They are also more forgiving of a slightly cramped indoor phase.

Indeterminate types keep growing and setting fruit until frost stops them. Given enough season they out-produce determinates comfortably, and most of the celebrated heirlooms are indeterminate. But they get big fast indoors, need staking and real space, and they reward precise timing — start one too early and you will be nursing a sprawling plant under lights for weeks.

Practically: in a genuinely short season, lean determinate and early. Where you have the days, indeterminates are worth the extra management — just hold to the shorter end of the sowing window, because they are the ones most likely to outgrow their pots by week eight.

Worked examples

Notice how late those prairie sowing dates look compared with the February enthusiasm on social media. That is not caution — it is arithmetic. A tomato sown in Winnipeg in early March will spend eleven weeks indoors waiting for a June transplant, and it will not thank you for it.

The soil temperature nobody checks

Your calculated transplant date is a plan. Soil temperature is the veto.

Tomato roots develop very slowly in cold soil. Below roughly 15°C a transplant more or less idles — not dying, just barely growing — and the stall can cost weeks that you never make back. The air can feel pleasant at noon while the soil twenty centimetres down is still holding onto April.

So before you plant, check with a soil thermometer on Amazon.ca rather than your instincts. Treat 15°C as your practical minimum and 16–18°C as the target for rapid establishment, measured in the morning rather than after a warm afternoon. If it is not there yet, wait — or warm the bed with black plastic or a cloche for a week first. A tomato planted into 18°C soil a week later will overtake one planted into 12°C soil, every time.

Why starting early backfires

It feels like cheating the season. It is not, for three reasons.

Light is the binding constraint, not time. A February seedling on a Canadian windowsill gets short days and weak, low-angle sun. It responds by stretching — long pale stems reaching for light, thin tissue, weak structure. Six weeks of good growth under adequate light beats twelve weeks of stretching, and it is not close.

Root-bound plants stall. A tomato held too long in a small cell circles its roots and becomes physiologically stuck. Transplanted out, it sulks for weeks while a younger, smaller plant beside it takes off. If you do start early, you must pot up into larger containers — which means more space, more mix, and more light, all through the darkest months.

Transplant shock compounds it. An overgrown, soft, indoor-raised plant handles wind, sun, and cold soil far worse than a compact, sturdy one. The head start evaporates in the first hard week outside.

The uncomfortable truth is that the fastest route to early tomatoes in a short season is not sowing earlier. It is choosing a faster variety, warming your soil, and protecting your transplants — and getting your sowing date right.

Put another way: what matters at planting time is the quality of the transplant far more than its age. A compact seven-week seedling with a thick stem and a healthy root ball will establish faster and outproduce a stretched twelve-week one, and the gap only widens after they go in the ground. Age is the number gardeners fixate on; sturdiness is the one that shows up in the harvest.

The other clock: will it ripen before fall frost?

Spring timing gets your plant into the ground. Fall frost decides whether the fruit ever ripens — and this is where northern gardeners actually lose their tomatoes, in late August, staring at a vine full of hard green globes.

The number on the seed packet — “68 days,” “80 days” — is days to maturity, and here is the trap: it is conventionally counted from transplant, not from sowing. Not always, though, and it is not standardised, so confirm the seller’s definition rather than assuming. Either way, it is measured under ideal conditions, and a cool northern summer stretches it.

The honest arithmetic: count the days from your realistic transplant date to your average first fall frost, then subtract a couple of weeks for cool-summer reality. Whatever remains is your true maturity budget.

That last row is the one that surprises people. Vancouver has a famously long frost-free season and mediocre tomatoes, because tomatoes ripen on accumulated warmth rather than calendar days. Frost-free length and heat are two different resources, and the North is often short of the second even when it has enough of the first.

Commercial growers put a name and a number on this: growing degree days (GDD), which accumulate how much warmth a season actually delivers above a base temperature rather than simply counting days on a calendar. It explains something every northern gardener has experienced — two summers with identical frost dates producing completely different tomato crops, because one was warm and one was merely long. If a variety consistently fails to ripen for you despite the calendar saying it should, heat accumulation is usually the reason, and the fix is a faster variety or a warmer microclimate rather than an earlier sowing date.

Hardening off — the two weeks you cannot skip

A seedling raised indoors has never met wind, direct sun, or a cold night. Move it straight into the garden and it will suffer real transplant shock: wilting, a two-to-three-week growth stall, sometimes permanent stunting. In a 100-day season, a three-week stall is most of your crop.

Build roughly 7 to 14 days into your plan before your transplant date — some extension guidance puts the minimum nearer 5 to 10, so treat a week as the floor and two as comfortable. Start with an hour or two in full shade, sheltered from wind, and bring them back in. Increase time and exposure daily, saving full sun and open wind for the last few days. Bring them in overnight until nights are genuinely mild.

⚠️ Count these days as part of your schedule, not as an afterthought. Working back from transplant: subtract 7–14 days for hardening off, and your sowing date shifts accordingly.

What actually helps

The gear list for tomato seedlings is short, and one item matters more than all the others.

Light, first and always. This is the single highest-return purchase in seed starting, and a windowsill in March is not enough anywhere in Canada. An inexpensive full-spectrum LED grow light on Amazon.ca kept close to the seedlings — a few inches, raised as they grow — is the difference between compact, sturdy plants and pale stretched ones. Judge a fixture by whether it actually keeps your seedlings compact, not by the words on the box: “full spectrum” is a marketing label, while usable light intensity at seedling height is the thing that does the work. Sterile seed-starting mix, not potting soil or garden soil. Fine, light, fast-draining and free of pathogens. Damping-off — where seedlings collapse at the soil line — is the most common way to lose a whole tray, and it comes overwhelmingly from unsterile media. The reason is worth understanding: warm roots speed a seedling’s growth rate, and growth pushed faster than your light can support is exactly what produces soft, elongated stems. It is the combination of warmth and insufficient light that causes legginess, not bottom heat by itself.

A small fan, oddly enough. Gentle air movement for a few hours a day thickens stems and reduces fungal problems. It mimics the wind the plant will eventually face and makes hardening off easier.

Common questions

Can tomatoes survive 5°C at night?

They will survive it — tomatoes are killed by frost, not by cool nights — but survival is not the goal. Below about 10°C tomatoes essentially stop growing, and repeated cold nights cause stunting, poor fruit set, and sometimes purpling of the leaves from impaired phosphorus uptake. A plant that spends its first fortnight outdoors shivering at 5°C will be behind one planted a week later into warmer conditions.

What happens if my tomatoes get frost?

A light frost blackens leaf tissue and may kill growing tips; a hard frost kills the plant outright. Unlike hardy greens, tomatoes have no frost tolerance to fall back on. If frost is forecast after you have planted, cover the plants — row cover, a bucket, even a cardboard box — and remove it in the morning. Covering is far cheaper than replacing.

Can I transplant tomatoes before the last frost?

Only with protection and a willingness to accept the risk. Row cover, cloches, water-filled plant protectors, a cold frame or a tunnel all buy you real days, and prairie growers use them routinely to work around a June transplant date. Without protection, planting before your average last frost is a coin flip — and the plant gains little anyway, because cold soil stalls it.

When should I pot up my tomato seedlings, and how tall should they be?

Pot up once roots fill the cell or when the first true leaves are well developed — usually two to three weeks after germination. At transplant time, aim for a plant roughly 15–25 cm tall that is sturdy rather than tall: thick stem, close-spaced leaves, dark green. A 30 cm seedling with a thin pale stem is not ahead of a 15 cm compact one; it is behind.

Can I start tomatoes in February in Canada?

Only on the south coast of BC, where transplanting happens in late April. Everywhere else, February sowing means eight to fourteen weeks indoors through the darkest part of the year, and the result is usually a weaker plant than one sown in April. If you are itching to sow something in February, sow onions, leeks, or celery — they genuinely need that long.

What if I started too early — can I fix it?

Yes, mostly. Pot up into a larger container as soon as roots fill the cell, keep light close and bright, run a fan for stem strength, and keep the plant slightly cool to slow growth. If it is badly leggy, tomatoes have a rare advantage: you can bury the stem deep at transplant and it will root along the buried section. It is the one crop that forgives this mistake.

Do I need a grow light, or is a south window enough?

Plenty of gardeners do raise tomatoes on a bright south windowsill — they are simply not usually as sturdy. In most Canadian homes a dedicated grow light produces noticeably stronger seedlings than even a good south window, because a Canadian March delivers short days and weak low-angle sun through glass, and seedlings stretch toward it. A basic LED fixture is inexpensive, lasts years, and improves your results more than any other single purchase.

Should I start seeds earlier because my season is short?

This is the most intuitive mistake in northern gardening. A short season means you should choose faster varieties and warm your soil — not extend the indoor phase. The indoor phase is limited by light, and in February and March a northern house cannot supply it.

Does the days-to-maturity number include the indoor weeks?

Usually not — it is conventionally counted from transplant, so those six to eight indoor weeks sit on top of it. But the convention is not universal, so check the specific seller’s definition. Getting this wrong is how a “70-day” tomato turns out to need 120 days from sowing.
